How it works

The Annual Tehillimthon is made up of a number of elements:

The Sponsors

The Tehillim Reciters

                       The Charity Projects

                                    Those For Whom We Pray

Each of these plays a role and all of them together make up a major project which involves giving and receiving for each party involved as well as for the program as a whole.

The Sponsors

The Sponsors commit to donating a specific sum of money per chapter of Tehillim (1 unit of local currency per chapter. For example, 1NIS per chapter in Israel, $1 per chapter in the U.S.).  Sponsors have the option of limiting their donations or of offering an unlimited donation which will be based on the total amount of chapters read by 1 volunteer.

In addition, sponsors are asked to provide
The Annual Tehillimthon
with a list of people to pray for.  The reciter assigned to the charity project chosen by the sponsor will include these names in special prayers before and after the recitation of  the Tehillim.

After Shavuos, sponsors will be contacted by e-mail and informed of the amount of Tehillim said on their behalf.  They will be asked to send a check made out to
Simchas Torah Yerushalayim with the appropriate sum to our address in Israel. (Alternatively, for tax deduction in the U.S., dollar checks may be made payable to American Friends of Simtar, A.F.O.S.)

The Tehillim Reciters

These are volunteers who are committed to reciting at least 1 Book of Tehillim (which consists of 150 chapters) on Shavuos* and more if possible.  The volunteer says each book without interruptions, while doing his or her best not to interfere with the family experience of the holiday. Each volunteer receives a list of people to pray for.

* Please note: Although Shavuos is 2 days outside of Israel, our volunteers will complete their Tehillim on the 6th of Sivan(the day Shavuos is celebrated in Israel).

The Charity Projects

Each of our causes provides us with the merit of donating to charity and for praying for our fellow. In return, representatives of each project will be provided with a list of names of the sponsors whom they will pray for at holy sites in Israel, upon completion of the Tehillimthon.

Those for whom we pray

These people provide us with the added merit of praying for our fellow. In the past, we have received many reports that prayers were answered within the few months following the Tehillimthon (some as quickly as hours after the Tehillimthon!)  They also have the merit of providing their sponsors with the opportunity to give charity in their names.
